Here’s a detailed breakdown of what is typically done during a bicycle overhaul:

1. Disassembly

  • Remove Components: The bike is fully disassembled, including the removal of the wheels, drivetrain, brakes, nuts & bolts and other components. (complete breakdown of the bike)
  • Inspect Parts: All parts are closely inspected for wear and damage. This includes checking the frame for cracks, rust, or other signs of damage.

2. Cleaning

  • Degrease and Clean: All parts and components are thoroughly cleaned using a degreaser, Ultrasonic tank, specialized tools & elbow grease, to remove old dirt, grime and grease. This includes the chain, cassette, derailleurs, chainrings, and bearings.
  • Frame Cleaning: The frame is cleaned, and any rust or corrosion is addressed.

3. Inspection and Replacement

  • Bearings: Bearings in the hubs, bottom bracket, headset, and pedals are checked for wear and service. If they are damaged or worn out, they are replaced.
  • Cables and Housing: Shift and brake cables, along with their housing, are inspected for fraying or damage. They are replaced if necessary.
  • ***If applicable – firmware updated
  • Chain and Drivetrain: The chain, cassette, and chainrings are checked for wear and replaced if they are too worn.
  • Brake Pads and Rotors: Brake pads and rotors are inspected and replaced if they are worn down.
  • Complete Brake System Flush – All old fluids are flushed from brake system and replaced with new fluids.

4. Lubrication and Reassembly

  • Lubricate Components: Bearings, the chain, and other moving parts are lubricated with the appropriate type of grease or oil.
  • Connecting Hardware: All bolts, nuts & screws are cleaned, and appropriate new thread prep applied.
  • Reassemble the Bike: All components are carefully reassembled. This includes installing new parts where necessary. All parts are installed and torqued according to manufacturer specifications.

5. Adjustment and Tuning

  • Adjust Brakes and Derailleurs: Brakes and derailleurs are adjusted for proper alignment and performance. This includes fine-tuning the shifting and brake lever feel.
  • Wheel Truing: Wheels are checked for trueness (straightness) and adjusted if necessary.

6. Final Inspection and Test Ride

  • Safety Check: A final inspection ensures that all bolts are properly torqued, and all components are secure.
  • Test Ride: A short test ride is performed to ensure that the bike is functioning correctly and smoothly.

An overhaul is often recommended annually for riders who use their bikes frequently or ride in challenging conditions, like off-road or in wet weather. It's a great way to ensure the bike remains reliable and safe.
